Associate Medical Director

LA County Department of Mental Health

SHAYAN RAB, M.D.

Dr. Rab is an Associate Medical Director for Field-Based Services at the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) and is a Supervising Psychiatrist overseeing the county's highly acclaimed HOME Team and Hollywood 2.0 programs. He completed his undergraduate and medical school education at USC and then trained at the UCLA-Olive View Psychiatry Residency Program where he also served as Chief Resident of Education in his final year.

Currently, he is double board-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. In addition to his clinical duties at DMH, Dr. Rab is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA and a member of the academic faculty at the UCLA-Olive View Residency Program where he supervises the street psychiatry clinical rotation to train the future generations of psychiatrists.

Dr. Rab began his street psychiatry career in 2019 when he became the first full-time street psychiatrist for DMH. Over the past 5 years, he worked closely with HOME leadership to significantly expand DMH field-based services for people with severe mental illness who were also experiencing chronic homelessness. The HOME team now has 15 street psychiatrists and a total staff count of around 250 members which includes community health workers, social workers, substance use counselors, and nurses. Together with his countywide teams, Dr. Rab provides transformative outreach, treatment, and housing services to over 1700 people experiencing homelessness across Los Angeles County. He has also taken an increasing number of leadership roles within the department and created entirely new mental health ecosystems of care by integrating field-based services with hospitals, housing facilities, county programs, and community healthcare providers.

When not working, Dr. Rab enjoys exploring his other passions, which include performing stand-up comedy, watching every MARVEL movie, and mixing techno music as a DJ at local venues.
